The Detroit Schools Crisis: A New Economic Reality?

This week, 30 schools in Detroit will be closing due to budget cuts and declining enrollment. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District will also close 16 schools this year.

Is the downsizing of schools a new economic reality for the urban core?

  1. "The building is crumbling, there aren't enough students to fill its classrooms, and it would cost too much to fix all of its problems. " - "A third of the city is vacant."

When a third of the city is vacant it only follows that things like this would happen. That's a lot of people not helping the city in terms of taxes.

However, as you point out, it's not just Detroit, but Cleveland as well as we are losing 16 of our own schools.

I'm not sure what the answer could be.. Raise taxes? I'm sure that would not sit well with many. Keeping jobs within the states, within Detroit and within Cleveland is important so that there are more workers paying local taxes and buying local goods. Although another problem is this: Where are we to find those jobs? :-/ The big 3 in Detroit have took a hard hit and the city followed. We have quite a future ahead of us.
